Holiness reflects wholeness. This is certainly true in the life of Alice Ingham. This extraordinary Lancashire woman of the nineteenth century emerges from the pages of this biography as a woman of faith, belonging to an endless line of holy individuals transcending time and nationality. Like Mary, the Mother of the Lord Alice’s life is one of constant meditation on the Word in the context of daily life. Her maxim: “Blessed be God, how wonderful are his ways” is a powerful echo of Mary’s Magnificat in Luke 2. Both women mirror the soul of faith communities. We are invited to respond. Alice’s story is awesome. So too is the grace of God in each one of us. In Alice we meet a familiar and homely companion on our own faith journey.
